Questions about TOVI
The short, practical answers. If yours isn't here, write to us.
Schools
- How does TOVI work during the school day?
- Each pupil locks their phone in their own TOVI pouch in the morning and keeps it with them. At the end of the day they unlock it themselves at a wall-mounted TOVI Station.
- Does the school need to store phones?
- No. Phones never change hands — the pupil keeps their own phone with them all day.
- Who unlocks the pouch?
- The pupil does, at a fixed TOVI Station. Stations are placed wherever they serve the school best.
- How are the stations installed?
- TOVI plans the placement with the school and installs the stations professionally. Mounting hardware is included, and the unlocking points are tested before handover.
- What if a phone is needed mid-day?
- Every classroom has a magnetic backup unlocker, so staff can open a pouch immediately. It's the exception path — everyday unlocking stays self-service at the fixed TOVI Stations.
- Can a pupil circumvent the system?
- TOVI makes it easy to follow the agreed routine. Deliberate rule-breaking is handled according to the school's own rules — the system doesn't need to be made more complicated for that.
- Can a school discuss a pilot?
- Yes — we're currently speaking with Finnish schools about the first implementations. Write to hello@omatovi.com and we'll take it from there.
Product
- Does TOVI need an app?
- No. There is no app, no account and nothing to log in to.
- Does it need power?
- No. The locking mechanism is mechanical, and the stations need no electricity or network.
- Does it collect student data?
- No. The product contains no electronics and no identifier, so there is nothing to collect.
- Does TOVI block the phone's signal?
- No — and it doesn't need to. The phone doesn't have to leave the network; it has to stay out of use. That's why there's no signal-blocking lining.
- How does the mechanical system work?
- A steel pin closes the pouch by hand. It opens when the pouch is pressed against the magnetic surface of a TOVI Station.
